A new book brings together the findings and recommendations of the project “Climate Adaptation, Floods, Resilience” (Klima-Anpassung, Hochwasser, Resilienz - KAHR). In one of the chapters, IQIB provides interesting insights into knowledge transfer as part of its role as the project office for Rhineland-Palatinate.
Learning from the July 2021 disaster experiences and building resilient structures: The Open Access book “Die Flutkatastrophe 2021 – Vom Wiederaufbau zur Klimaresilienz” offers concrete recommendations for flood management – for the general public and the professional community.
The authors describe the psychological, social and economic consequences of the flooding. They analyse the challenges involved in reconstruction and emphasise the need for integrated flood risk management that takes technical, natural and social aspects into account.
In a chapter on knowledge transfer (´Experiences in Reconstruction`), a team of experts from IQIB – Dr Bert Droste-Franke, Dr Michael Kunkis and Tanja Nietgen – identifies the challenges involved in successfully transferring scientific findings into practice. The researchers emphasise that, for this transfer to be effective, local needs must already be considered when findings are being processed and project results must reach the relevant target group via suitable instruments. IQIB has successfully carried out this task in its role as the project office for Rhineland-Palatinate within the project.
As part of the KAHR project (funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research – now the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space), 13 partners from research and practice provided scientific support - from November 2021 to February 2025 - for the reconstruction efforts in the regions of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia affected by the 2021 flood disaster.
