KAHR: Climate adaptation, flooding, resilience

The KAHR project, funded by the BMFTR (earlier: BMBF), aims to use the latest scientific findings to support reconstruction measures in the regions of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate that were destroyed by the flood disaster in July 2021.

IQIB team “KAHR”: Tanja Nietgen, Petra Prenzel

Duration: November 2021 to February 28, 2025

Funding: Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from funds provided by the “Research for Sustainable Development (FONA)” strategy

Partners: RWTH Aachen University (Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Schüttrumpf; University of Stuttgart (Institute of Spatial and Regional Planning), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörn Birkmann; University of Potsdam (Institute of Environmental Science and Geography), Prof. Dr. Annegret Thieken; Koblenz University of Applied Sciences (Department of Civil Engineering), Prof. Dr. Lothar Kirschbauer; Technical University of Kaiserslautern (Department of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management), Prof. Dr. Robert Jüpner; Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ (Department of Urban and Environmental Sociology), Prof. Dr. Christian Kuhlicke; Helmholtz Centre Potsdam (German Research Centre for Geosciences, Hydrology Section), Prof. Dr. Bruno Merz; German Institute of Urban Affairs, Dipl.-Ing. Jens Hasse; Wasserverband Eifel-Rur, Dr. Gerd Demny; Flood Competence Center, Cologne, Georg Johann; TU Dortmund University (Department of Spatial Planning), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Greiving; Ahrweiler district, Michael R. Schäfer.

Objective: Thirteen partners from academia and industry are involved in the KAHR joint project. Together, they will address issues relating to climate adaptation, risk-based spatial planning and flood protection. The aim is to develop concrete measures for climate-resilient reconstruction and redevelopment in the affected regions.

IQIB provides the project office for the Ahr Valley in Rhineland-Palatinate and serves as an interface between science, politics and regional actors. IQIB's regional roots in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler enable it to directly identify the needs of local stakeholders on site and to design tailor-made participation formats and expert events. The tasks include a qualitative network analysis of actors and organisations in the district of Ahrweiler, the establishment and maintenance of an internal project knowledge and information management system, and the transfer of current research results from the project partners into the reconstruction process.
