The energy system is a key factor for the economy and society. At the annual meeting of the Energy System Analysis Research Network in Berlin, Dr Bert Droste-Franke (Head of „System Evaluation & Societal Future Viability“ at IQIB), Dr Davy van Doren and Dr Markus Voge presented two of our current projects (funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy) on the resilient design of future energy systems during a poster session and discussed them with the expert community.

“To achieve climate neutrality by 2045, socially and economically significant decisions must be taken today. Energy system analysis contributes to climate neutrality by using transdisciplinary research approaches to anticipate possible developments in the energy system, thereby providing recommendations for action and knowledge for guidance. One of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy priorities is to make the results of energy system analysis research available to society, industry, politics and public administration as quickly and effectively as possible.”

Project ‘Knowledge integration in energy system analysis for the discursive-reflexive evaluation of transformation paths from different societal perspectives’ (WiETrans):

We illustrate the impacts of various policy approaches and measures on different future scenarios for the energy transition. Through scientific analyses and innovative visualisations, we develop realistic and robust scenarios for discursive-reflective decision-making processes. In doing so, we involve political and societal stakeholders in the project to identify, analyse and visualise key aspects for the evaluation of scenarios from various perspectives, going beyond the usual technical and economic representations.

Projekt EnergieRegionPlus - Design tools for a smart and resilient regional energy transition:

Using the district of Ahrweiler as a case study, we are developing planning tools and methods to work with local authorities to set up ‘virtual power plants’ in which electricity generation, storage and consumption are intelligently linked. This enables synergies to be harnessed and electricity to be supplied in line with demand – despite the fluctuations caused by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. The electricity supply becomes more reliable and can even potentially continue to function during large-scale power cuts. This also strengthens the resilience of local authorities and regions. 

The exchange with colleagues from academia, politics and industry has provided valuable input for our work. We look forward to further developing the discussed approaches in our projects.
