IQIB presents a model for a ‘virtual power plant’ at Bonn Science Night

How can local authorities become more resilient with electricity from wind and solar power?

Fascinating discussions, curious questions and plenty of interaction: Our exhibition on the energy supply of the future and on strengthening resilience captivated many interested visitors at the 15th Bonn Science Night on Münsterplatz.

At the interactive ‘SmartEnergyCity’ model cube, visitors eagerly switched wind turbines and solar panels on and off to observe the changes in the electricity supply: would households, critical infrastructure buildings and the manufacturing sector still receive sufficient energy? To what extent can a local authority be self-sufficient as part of a virtual power plant? When would there be surpluses that could be fed into the grid?

For two days, together with the DLR Projektträger, we highlighted the major challenges of the future from various research perspectives in a double tent – on Friday even until 11 pm!

In particular, the dialogue with the many school classes demonstrated just how important hands-on science is. The pupils made the most of the lively atmosphere on site to put questions about energy supply directly to the IQIB team present: Bert Droste-Franke, Markus Voge and Davy van Doren. Effective science communication requires direct dialogue!
