IQIB and the DLR Project Management Agency at the Bonn Science Night 2026: Experience research live

Test your energy management skills and supply a model city with electricity from renewable energy sources. Come and visit us on 21 and 22 May at Münsterplatz in Bonn.

Bonn Science Night

The energy transition up close: Come and visit us on the 15th Bonn Science Night and see for yourself how a city can be powered by wind and solar energy throughout the year. How does the energy supply change over the course of the year? What happens when the wind drops or the sun goes down? By selectively switching wind turbines, solar panels, energy storage systems, electric cars and buildings on and off, you can design your own personalised and smart consumption-generation-mix and experience first-hand how modern technology can balance the fluctuations in renewable energy and which limitations exist.

Resilience through smart networking

Behind this playful approach lies exciting research: our on-site experts will provide you with fascinating insights into the ‘EnergieregionPlus’ research project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE). As part of the project, we are working with the district of Ahrweiler to develop solutions for implementing a ‘virtual power plant’ as the nucleus of an energy region.

A ‘virtual power plant’ intelligently links electricity generation, storage and consumption in such a way that synergies can be fully utilised. The aim is to provide the population with a secure, cost-effective and, above all, crisis-resilient supply of electricity and heat. Particularly in the Ahr Valley, where strengthening regional resilience plays a central role five years since the flood disaster, the project demonstrates how decentralised structures increase reliability – and, in an emergency, can even ensure a certain level of basic supply in the event of widespread grid failures.

In the same tent, DLR Projektträger (DLR-PT) will be presenting further exciting projects relating to this year’s theme for Bonn’s Science Night, ‘Diagnosis: Future’. Through knowledge-based services in research, education and innovation, the DLR-PT is paving the way for the future – in health research, international cooperation, technology and education, and environmental and climate protection.
Come and visit us at Münsterplatz, discuss the future of energy with our scientists, and discover how innovative research sustainably safeguards the quality of life in our region.
